Afro-Cuban Sacred Rhythms & Community Cultural Exchange

    Havana 1.5 hours

    About This Experience

This structured cultural program takes place at Centro de las Raíces, Cuba’s first cultural center dedicated to Afro aesthetics and identity and headquarters of the Beyond Roots initiative. The experience offers participants an in-depth educational exploration of Afro-Cuban spirituality, music, and community traditions through direct engagement with local cultural practitioners.

The program begins with an introduction to the historical and spiritual significance of the Orishas, the revered deities of the Yoruba pantheon whose traditions form an essential part of Cuban cultural identity. Through a live performance of sacred dances and percussion, participants learn how rhythm, movement, and symbolism express ancestral heritage and spiritual meaning. The experience continues with an exploration of Afro-Cuban musical forms such as rumba and conga, examining their historical development and their lasting influence on Cuban society. Guests engage in guided discussion and experiential learning designed to foster deeper cultural understanding. Following the performance and dialogue, participants enjoy a traditional Afro-Cuban snack accompanied by one classic Cuban cocktail. The program concludes with time for reflection and interaction at Centro de las Raíces, including the opportunity to view and purchase handcrafted Afro-Cuban artisan products directly from local creators.

This experience is intentionally designed to provide meaningful engagement with Afro-Cuban cultural leaders and to generate direct economic support for independent community members, in full alignment with the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Support for the Cuban People travel authorization (31 CFR §515.574).
