Taste Havana’s incredible local flavors! Today’s support for the Cuban people engagement will begin with an interaction with your local Cuban guide who will provide an initial overview of the history of Rum within Cuban culture while discussing its many uses in individual Cubans lives from medicinal, celebrative to religious ceremonial uses culminating with a visit to the Havana Club Rum Museum near the port in Old Havana. Enjoy a journey back to the origins of Cuba's most famous spirit and experience the rum-making process firsthand. You will have the opportunity to participate in a tasting with a Cuban expert to learn about the fermentation process and as to why this is considered to be the one of the best rums in the world. Continue exploring Old Havana’s narrow streets, main squares and parks with opportunity to connect with individual Cuban citizens. Your knowledgeable Cuban guide will explain the restoration projects and conservation efforts in the area that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Visit the Plaza de Armas surrounded by historical buildings like Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, Castillo de la Real Fuerza (Royal Force Fortress) and El Templete, where the city was founded in 1519. Next, visit the Plaza de Catedral with a brief stop at La Bodeguita del Medio, where the popular Cuban “mojito” was created. Take advantage of the many opportunities you will have to engage in meaningful interactions with Cuban people from all walks of life who embody the richness of this unique culture. Now that you have built up an appetite, enjoy a lunch of authentic Cuban cuisine at a local “paladar”, a privately owned restaurant. The chef will explain the menu and share key points about Cuban cuisine. Take this opportunity to experience the entrepreneurial endeavors of the Cuban people and engage with Cuban staff about what it is like to work and run an independent restaurant. After lunch, you will walk along Obispo Boulevard to El Floridita, a restaurant and bar known for its daiquiris and for being a favorite hideaway place of Ernest Hemingway. Next, you will interact with an independent Cuban owner and driver of an American classic car who will explain the history of private car ownership in Cuba and their relationship with these classic automobiles often times staying within the family for decades. The exchange will culminate in a scenic ride and discussion together while exploring around the city and a stop at a local microbrewery (Cervecería Antiguo Almacén de Madera y Tabaco) located in the now restored port warehouses on the docks of Habana Bay. The Cuban brewery crafts and serves the best Cuban beer in town, so enjoy a cold one while you view the brewing process. With the conclusion of the experience, we recommend exploring the local independent community craft market located just a block from the brewery where you can find handmade artisanal goods and engage with local artisans.  You will have the opportunity to interact with self-employed Cuban individuals “Cuentapropistas” who run the privately-owned open air stores and art kiosks and sell their arts and crafts.
