About This Experience
Overview
Cuba’s spiritual landscape blends Christianity—mainly Catholicism and Protestant denominations—with Santería, a syncretic religion rooted in African traditions brought by enslaved people from Nigeria, Angola, and the Congo.
This guided experience is led by an independent local Cuban professional, creating meaningful opportunities to engage directly with Cuban individuals and support community-based initiatives and small entrepreneurs. The journey includes a visit to the Sanctuary of El Cobre, home of the Virgin of Charity, Cuba’s patron saint, revered by both Catholics and Santería practitioners. Along the way, visitors stop at Revolution Square, where the Virgin was crowned during the 1998 visit of Pope John Paul II, with an opportunity for diaologue and discourse with the local Cuban community memembers. The excursion continues to the town of El Cobre, known for its historic copper mines and early resistance by enslaved people.
At the Basilica, guests may visit the Chapel of Miracles, view offerings left by devotees, and learn about pilgrimage traditions. The return to the city may include a stop at the monument to the runaway slave by Cuban sculptor Alberto Lescay, honoring those who fought for freedom.
